The Opportunity

The Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering has an opportunity for a Research Associate / Senior Research Associate to work in the Motion Connect project, a research initiative to collect, harmonise and analyse paediatric data from all clinical gait laboratories in Australia.

You will be conducting independent and team research within the field of predictive musculoskeletal simulations.

This position will provide you with the opportunity to develop your scholarly research and professional activities both nationally and internationally. You will contribute to writing scientific papers and reports for international journals, participate in conferences and workshops, supervise HDR students, and actively engage with industry partners.

This role reports to Dr Luca Modenese and has no direct reports.
  • Salary:
  • Level A, Research Associate - AUD$110,059 to $117,718 per annum + 17% superannuation
  • Level B, Step 1, Senior Research Associate - AUD$123,620 per annum + 17% superannuation
  • Full time
  • Fixed-term contract 24 months
  • Location: Kensington Sydney, Australia

Skills And Experience

Level A
  • A PhD in a related discipline, and/or relevant work experience.
  • Proven commitment to proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake high quality academic research and conduct independent research with limited supervision.
  • Demonstrated track record of publications and conference presentations relative to opportunity.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
  • Evidence of highly developed interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and interact with a diverse range of stakeholders and students.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW's aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
  • Strong background in biomechanics and in the application of biomechanical principles to the study of musculoskeletal pathologies and neuromuscular conditions (ideally cerebral palsy).
  • Proficiency in scripting languages (required: Python and MATLAB) and programming (desirable: C++).
  • Extensive experience with at least one musculoskeletal simulation software package (desirable: OpenSim).
  • Experience with the generation of predictive simulations using musculoskeletal models (familiarity with one or more of these packages is desirable: OpenSim MOCO, Predsim, SCONE, Bioptim).
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW's aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
Level B (in addition to the above)
  • Demonstrated track record in research with outcomes of high quality and high impact with clear evidence of the desire and ability to continually achieve research excellence as well as the capacity for research leadership.
  • Experience in creating and personalising musculoskeletal models based on medical images or clinical measurements and observations.
  • Experience in the use of reinforcement learning and deep reinforcement learning for simulating human motion.
  • A track record of significant involvement with the profession and/or industry.
  • Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills.
  • High level communication skills and ability to network effectively and interact with a diverse range of students and staff.
