What You'll Do:
You will be a critical part of Avalara's compliance operations, focused on preparing, reviewing, and filing multi-jurisdictional tax returns while maintaining relationships with customers and U.S. jurisdictions. You will provide support troubleshooting, notice resolution, and change management while collaborating with teams to guide process improvements.You'll work on-site and will report to Manager, Compliance.
What Your Responsibilities Will Be:
- You will have to work in U.S. business hours, commit to a 3-year employment term, and travel to the U.S. 2-3 times annually.
- Prepare, review and file multi-jurisdictional tax returns for several frequencies; administer critical prepayment processes and manage filing calendar changes.
- Handle pre-cycle/off-cycle tasks, customer outreach, bulk account administration, special projects, and incident resolution.
- Research and resolve jurisdictional notices while maintaining expertise in jurisdiction websites, statutory bulletins, and proactive change management.
- Be a trusted resource for statutory readiness, troubleshooting, and reducing in-cycle risks.
- Perform QA on sales/use tax content and form changes, ensuring compliance and accuracy.
- Identify and implement process or technology enhancements to better serve customers.
- Lead and facilitate meetings with internal teams, cross-functional stakeholders, and jurisdiction representatives to guide decisions and execute projects.
- Communicate project updates by email, wiki, and newsletters, tailoring communication to suit multiple audiences.
- Attend legislative monitoring meetings and share relevant insights with the team.
- Build internal and external networks, including partnerships with Avalara's Government Relationship team and jurisdiction authorities, to improve compliance and product quality.
- Deliver clear, concise, and tailored communication; document and share updates.
- Lead discussions with senior management and jurisdictions, manage agendas, and provide relevant reports.
- Cultivate productive relationships with internal teams and external stakeholders, including jurisdiction authorities.
What You'll Need to be Successful:
Qualifications- Experience as Power of Attorney with U.S. State/Private Tax Departments, resolving jurisdictional notices.
- Expertise in U.S. transactional tax complexities: reporting, notices, audit red flags, and communication strategies.
- Reviewed indirect sales tax filings and conducted independent research analysis.
- Advocated scalable, timely tax return solutions as a tax technical stakeholder.
- Attended U.S. sales tax conferences and tradeshows.
- 2+ years working U.S. business hours; background in Big 4 or multinational tax departments.
- Minimum of 8 years of related experience with a bachelor's degree; or minimum 6 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with minimum 3 years' experience; or equivalent experience
- Expert understanding of Avalara customer data flow and platform features (nexus, exemptions, marketplace, rules, filing calendars, reporting, transactions).
- Review product enhancement requests (forms, automation, user interface, platform functions) and collaborate with Product Management to define requirements.
- Experience with transaction flow across the business and its impact on returns preparation and filing (advanced knowledge).
- Knowledge of transaction tax calculation, transaction data flow, returns mapping, and returns filing automation.
